The Real GDP

Education, health, skills, life expectancy. The most valuable asset any country has is its people. A healthy, well-educated population generates more value than any oil field or gold mine. In advanced economies, human capital accounts for roughly 70% of total national wealth.

Forests, farmland, clean water, minerals, biodiversity, fish stocks, clean air. GDP treats nature as free and infinite. When a country cuts down a rainforest, GDP only sees the revenue from selling the wood — not the loss of the forest itself. That's like selling your house and calling it income.

Rule of law, government effectiveness, corruption control, regulatory quality, political stability. Can you trust that contracts will be enforced? That courts are fair? That the government won't change the rules overnight? Good institutions are invisible when they work — and devastating when they don't.

R&D spending, patents, scientific papers, total factor productivity. Technology is the multiplier — it's how you do more with less. A country that invents better ways to farm, build, or heal creates wealth that compounds over generations. This is the Solow residual: the growth that can't be explained by just adding more workers or machines.
